U Gradskom muzeju Varaždin od 1939. godine smještena je Galerija starih i novih majstora, čiji fundus danas obuhvaća više od 5300 umjetničkih djela, raspoređenih u deset zbirki. Odjel trenutno ima dva stalna postava: stalni postav starih majstora i stalni postav hrvatskih majstora 20. stoljeća koji se naizmjenično izlažu na prvom katu barokne palače Sermage.
Najstarija po nastanku, među djelima se ističe Žitna Madona ili Bogorodica s klasjem, slikana u tehnici tempere na drvu, rad neutvrđenoga majstora iz 15. stoljeća. Jedna je to od 80-ak slika u Europi s prikazom Bogorodice u haljini od žita, što je čini raritetom i pravim draguljem u galerijskome fundusu varaždinskoga muzeja.
Sustavnim prikupljanjem likovnih djela hrvatskih autora, stvorena je značajna zbirka u galerijskome fundusu iz koje je koncem 2006. godine oblikovan i stalni postav.

I enjoyed going through the exhibitions that had been displayed. It was a wonderful experience sampling contemporary and old art.

Very quiet and lovely place. The work of art is both amazing and satisfying , my family and I enjoyed the history lesson from some of the artefacts

Amazing art works and exhibits were hanged and arranged around the art museum and the place looked lovely with soothing view of the place.

Art has always fascinated me. I visited this gallery and it surpased my imagination. I never knew the old and the new can be put together to produce something fabulous and magical. The art collection was mesmerizing.
